THE LOWDOWN

LECCE

Under the management of former Benevento coach Roberto D’Aversa, Lecce would have gone into this season seeing survival as a success and as they sit firmly in the middle-of-the-table at the turn of the New Year, this year would have to be viewed as a relative success. They do come into this on the back of some poor form, though.

Their back-to-back to nil defeats to Internazionale and Atalanta before the turn of the year mean that they have managed just one win in their last 14 matches across all competitions. That run of form means that they don’t quite have the gap between themselves and the bottom three that they would have liked just yet.

CAGLIARI

Following promotion last season, Cagliari began the 2023/24 campaign without a victory in their opening 11 matches. However, the Sardinians have been much-improved over the autumn as they mount a serious battle against the drop under the management of former Leicester and Chelsea boss, Claudio Ranieri.

The islanders begin the weekend’s round of fixtures sitting just about in the bottom three and the relegation places but they have managed three victories in their last seven matches. They come into this one on the back of a goalless draw with Empoli before being beaten 4-1 by AC Milan in the Round of 16 of the Coppa Italia in midweek.

CAGLIARI

Cagliari have several absentees for this weekend with the likes of Gianluca Lapadula and Eldor Shomurodov injured, whilst Nahitan Nandez a doubt.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Scuffet; Zappa, Goldaniga, Dossena, Azzi; Prati; Sulemana, Deiola; Nicolas Viola; Petagna, Pavoletti

UNAVAILABLE: Luvumbo (Suspended), Lapadula (Injured), Shomurodov (Injured), Rog (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

In their 18 matches so far this season, these two sides have combined for just 35 goals. Six points separate them with Lecce believing themselves to be firmly in mid-table but an away win would see Cagliari able to likely climb out of the bottom three. Lecce, in theory, want to play a progressive style of football so should take the game to Cagliari so, given that only two sides have conceded more often than the visitors, a home win would be a fair expectation.
