THE LOWDOWN

LAZIO

Coached by Maurizio Sarri, Lazio come into this one on the back of a dramatic and feisty 1-0 defeat of Roma in the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia in midweek in the Derby della Capitale at Stadio Olimpico. Mattia Zaccagni’s 51st minute penalty separated the sides as Pedro, Sardar Azmoun and Gianluca Mancini were all sent off in second-half stoppage-time.

It has been a really underwhelming campaign for Sarri and Lazio so far this season as they spend the vast majority of this campaign sitting firmly in the middle-of-the-table. However, like that midweek cup win, they are beginning to click into gear and move themselves up the table with three successive Serie A victories.

LECCE

After losing their manager in the summer, Lecce have performed admirably to ensure they begin the second-half of the 2023/24 Serie A campaign sitting firmly in the middle-of-the-table. The visitors were held to a 1-1 draw by struggling Cagliari in their most recent outing, last weekend, and their form is a little underwhelming at the moment.

The visitors’ 1-1 draw with the Sardinians means they have now managed just one victory in their last 15 matches across all competitions in a run that stretches all the way back to edging past ten-man Genoa in mid-September. They do have a fairly comfortable gap between themselves and the bottom three and the relegation places, though.

THE TEAM NEWS

LAZIO

Lazio more or less have a clean bill of health with their only doubt for this weekend being club captain, Ciro Immobile, as they welcome Lecce.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Provedel; Marusic, Patric, Gila, Pellegrini; Guendouzi, Rovella, Kamada; Isaksen, Castellanos, Zaccagni

QUESTIONABLE: Immobile (Injured)

LECCE

Lecce are missing several key players for this weekend’s trip to the capital with Lameck Banda, Ahmed Touba and Hamza Rafia all away at the Africa Cup of Nations.

PREDICTED XI (4-1-4-1): Falcone; Gendrey, Pongracic, Baschirotto, Gallo; Ramadani; Oudin, Kaba, Gonzalez, Strefezza; Krstovic

UNAVAILABLE: Rafia (International duty), Touba (International duty), Banda (International duty), Sansone (Injured), Dermaku (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Throughout the season, Lazio have been really underwhelming and even in their fairly rare victories, they have been unconvincing. However, they now head into the second-half of the campaign in the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia, knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League and in the hunt for a top four finish. They face a Lecce side that may appear to be in a respectable league position but they have struggled for a few months now and Lazio should get over the line for a fifth straight win in all competitions.
