THE LOWDOWN
INTER MILAN
Under the management of former Lazio boss Simone Inzaghi, Internazionale reached the final of the UEFA Champions League for the first time since they were treble winners in 2010, eventually losing 1-0 to Manchester City, and also won the Coppa Italia by defeating Fiorentina in the final. It is now up to Inzaghi to prove that he can also challenge for silverware over the course of a 38-game league season because, once again, it is very open at the start of the Serie A season.
Inter have lost Romelu Lukaku and Andre Onana over the summer, as well as Milan Skriniar, but, arguably crucially, have held on to both Nicolo Barella and Lautaro Martinez as of yet. They have replaced Onana well with Yann Sommer and also provided attacking depth with the additions of Marcus Thuram and Marko Arnautovic.
MONZA
Following promotion from Serie B at the end of the 2021/22 season, Monza had a really tough start to life back in the top-flight but eventually settled and comfortably finished in the middle-of-the-table, under the management of Raffaele Palladino. They are benefitting from the financial and footballing expertise of a Silvio Berlusconi-led operation within the club.
The visitors have lost key man Carlos Augusto on loan to their upcoming opposition but they have also added some interesting additions, too. The likes of Inter trio Valentino Carboni, Roberto Gagliardini and Danilo D’Ambrosio should be good signings. Relegation seems a long way off but it does appear unlikely they can realistically challenge for a top seven finish and European qualification just yet.
THE TEAM NEWS
INTER MILAN
Simone Inzaghi, after leading the Nerazzurri to the UEFA Champions League final last season, will be expected to push them back on in Serie A and challenge for the Scudetto. He has a favoured back three system but will be without key defender Francesco Acerbi due to injury.
PREDICTED XI (3-4-1-2): Sommer; Darmian, Bisseck, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Calhanoglu, Dimarco; Mkhitaryan; Martinez, Thuram
UNAVAILABLE: Acerbi (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE:
MONZA
Raffaele Palladino’s preferred formation can vary between a 3-4-3 or a 3-4-1-2, or even a 3-4-2-1, but he will predominantly play a back three with a variation up-front. He will also be without a key element of his defence due to Armando Izzo’s suspension on this opening match day.
PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Di Gregorio; D’Ambrosio, A.Carboni, Mari; Pereira, Pessina, Gagliardini, Kyriakopoulos; V.Carboni, Caprari; Petagna
UNAVAILABLE: Izzo (Suspended)

THE PREDICTION
This is something of a derby match. Inter will sense an opportunity to lay down a marker with Napoli losing key players, as well as their manager, AC Milan losing a key player but also re-investing into the squad very well, Juventus in some sort of flux, particularly off the field, and Lazio also losing a key player in Sergej Milinkovic-Savic. Monza will be front foot and seek to get at their opposition and it wouldn’t be surprising if they did cause a genuine threat but Inter, especially at San Siro, should get off to a winning start.
TIP: INTER TO WIN
