THE LOWDOWN

INTER MILAN

Simone Inzaghi has to prove himself as a league manager. He guided Internazionale to the Coppa Italia trophy last season, defeating Fiorentina in the final, and also helped the Nerazzurri reach their first UEFA Champions League final since they won the treble in 2010. Inter have an excellent squad with good depth all round and will be expected to challenge for the title, especially with a gap potentially left by some change at Napoli.

Internazionale do begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting at the top-of-the-table, above their city rivals on goal difference. They have scored eight goals and are yet to concede in their opening three matches. Inter began by cruising past both Monza and Cagliari by two goals to nil before hammering Fiorentina 4-0 at San Siro before the international break.

AC MILAN

AC Milan were the team that were defeated by Inter in the semi-finals of last season’s UEFA Champions League. The Rossoneri had a very difficult start to the calendar year of 2023 and a top four spot was in jeopardy, let alone the fact they had obviously gone on to relinquish their grip on the Italian title.

Under the management of Stefano Pioli, Milan have reinvested the Sandro Tonali money very well over the summer. The exciting signings of Yunus Musah, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Christian Pulisic, Samu Chukwueze and Noah Okafor compliment an already strong squad and like their rivals, they will be seeking to reclaim the Scudetto this season.

THE TEAM NEWS

INTER MILAN

Simone Inzaghi has more or less a fully fit and available squad for this weekend’s clash but he is without injured midfielder Stefano Sensi for this one.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Sommer; Darmian, de Vrij, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan; Martinez, Thuram

UNAVAILABLE: Sensi (Injured)

AC MILAN

Stefano Pioli is without suspended Fikayo Tomori after his red card against Roma and he also has another defender, Pierre Kalulu, out injured alongside the long term absentee Ismael Bennacer as well as striker Olivier Giroud.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Maignan; Calabria, Thiaw, Kjaer, Hernandez; Loftus-Cheek, Krunic; Pulisic, Reijnders, Leao; Okafor

UNAVAILABLE: Tomori (Suspended), Kalulu (Injured), Bennacer (Injured), Giroud (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

The Derby della Madonnina is always a classic encounter and one of the great matches in European football. This time, though, they are first and second in the table as the only two sides left in Italy’s top-flight with a 100% record. They met in the semi-finals of last season’s European cup and were the two previous winners of the Scudetto prior to Napoli’s win last year. These are two members of European royalty enjoying a renaissance of their rivalry. Both sides have been proactive this season but, given Inter’s impressive defensive record and Milan’s key defensive absentees, value should be found in backing the nominal ‘hosts’ at San Siro.

TIP: DOUBLE CHANCE – INTER TO WIN OR DRAW
