THE LOWDOWN

HELLAS VERONA

At the start of last season, Serie A re-introduced a ruling that any teams who finish level on points in meaningful positions would then go and play an end of season playoff. Remarkably, exactly that scenario happened with Spezia and Verona level on points in 17th and 18th. Verona eventually went on to defeat Spezia in dramatic circumstances a week after the campaign.

The home team went and pinched Lecce’s impressive boss, Marco Baroni, and he has lad Verona to an impressive start to this season. On the opening day of the campaign, they went to Florence and defeated Empoli by a goal to nil before then beating Jose Mourinho’s Roma in their second match. They did suffer a 3-1 defeat away to Sassuolo a couple of weeks ago, though.

BOLOGNA

Last season, following the early season departure of the now late Sinisa Mihaijlovic, Bologna appointed former PSG and AC Milan midfielder Thiago Motta. Motta, who has gained a reputation for wanting to play an innovative style of football, led Bologna well as they finished in mid-table and flirted with a run towards the top seven and European spots.

A run towards the top seven and European spots is expected to be the goal, once again, this season. They began the 2023/24 Serie A campaign with a 2-0 loss at home to a very strong looking AC Milan team before earning a 1-1 draw in Turin away to Juventus. Since that point, they defeated newly-promoted Cagliari prior to the September international break.

THE TEAM NEWS

HELLAS VERONA

Marco Baroni is without several key attacking players with Darko Lazovic, Thomas Henry, Jayden Braaf and Ajdin Hrustic all missing due to injury for this weekend.

QUESTIONABLE:

BOLOGNA

Thiago Motta is without injured goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski as well as Adama Soumaoro, whilst winger Musa Barrow is also an injury doubt for this one.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Ravaglia; Posch, Beukema, Lucumi, Kristiansen; Aebischer, Moro; Ndoye, Ferguson, Karlsson; Zirkzee

UNAVAILABLE: Skorupski (Injured), Soumaoro (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Barrow (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

This could well be an entertaining game in Verona on Monday evening. Marco Baroni is known for a front foot and entertaining style of football that produced some excellent Lecce performances last season, following their promotion from Serie B in 2022. Taking on a Bologna side that Thiago Motta is also trying to get to play in a cohesive and proactive style of football, this one is one to keep an eye on as a neutral. Both teams scoring looks a good bet for this one.
