THE LOWDOWN

GENOA

Genoa were relegated to the second-tier back in 2022 but earned an immediate promotion as Serie B runners’ up, last season. They lost manager Alexander Blessin to Royale Union Saint-Gilloise mid-way through the campaign but Albert Gilardino saw them over the line before an impressive summer transfer window which included the arrivals of the likes of Mateo Retegui.

So far this season, they have been relatively underwhelming with just two victories in their nine matches as they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the bottom-half of the table. They have suffered back-to-back to nil defeats against Atalanta and AC Milan either side of the international break.

SALERNITANA

Following promotion in 2021, Salernitana pulled off a miraculous escape in 2022 under Davide Nicola before an eventually comfortable finish in 2023, despite the mid-season sacking of Nicola. Over the summer, they appointed Paulo Sousa but the former Poland boss has already been sacked and replaced by Filippo Inzaghi.

Inzaghi’s first game in charge saw ‘The Garnets’ share a 2-2 draw with fellow strugglers, rock-bottom Cagliari. That draw means they have collected four points in their opening nine matches with four draws and five defeats as they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the bottom three and the relegation places.

THE TEAM NEWS

GENOA

Alberto Gilardino will be without forward Junior Messias due to injury with fellow forward and star signing, Mateo Retegui, also a doubt for this weekend’s clash.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Leali; Dragusin, Bani, Vasquez; Sabelli, Thorsby, Frendrup, Malinovskiy, Haps; Gudmundsson, Ekuban

UNAVAILABLE: Messias (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Retegui (Injured)

SALERNITANA

Filippo Inzaghi has been blessed with no injuries or suspensions for this trip to Genoa so could name an unchanged eleven for this weekend.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Costil; Mazzocchi, Fazio, Gyomber, Bradaric; Coulibaly, Maggiore, Kastanos; Candreva, Cabral; Dia

THE PREDICTION

Ahead of the 2023/24 campaign, these would have been two sides tipped to get relegated or be down in the relegation dogfight in Serie A this season. Genoa made some impressive and interesting signings, though, so would have hoped to exploit what appears to be quite a poor mid-table in Italy’s top-flight this season. Salernitana have been very poor this season and this is a tough test, especially away from home, with Genoa the firm favourites.

TIP: GENOA TO WIN
