THE LOWDOWN
GENOA
Genoa were surprisingly relegated from Serie A in 2022 but they managed to gain an immediate promotion back to the top-flight of Italian football. Alexander Blessin left for Union SG mid-way through the campaign but former Italy striker Alberto Gilardino is now performing well in the dugout. They made some interesting summer additions, most notably that of Italy forward Mateo Retegui.
The home team have begun the 2023/24 campaign with two victories and two defeats in their opening four matches across all competitions. They began by beating Modena in the first round of the Coppa Italia before a hammering at the hands of Fiorentina. After that they surprisingly defeated Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico before a 1-0 loss away to Torino with the winning goal coming deep into second-half stoppage-time.
NAPOLI
Reigning champions Napoli won their first Serie A title outside of the Diego Maradona era and just their third Scudetto of all time. However, they have lost key defender Kim Min-jae as well as manager Luciano Spalletti over the summer. With Khvicha Kvaratskhelia out of form and Piotr Zielinski constantly linked with a move away, the unconvincing management of Rudi Garcia faced and faces a tough test this season.
The Neapolitans began the campaign with a comprehensive and comfortable 3-1 victory away to newly-promoted Frosinone on the opening day of the season before an easy 2-0 win at home to Sassuolo. After those victories, though, they went into the September international break on the back of being surprisingly defeated by an out of form Lazio at the San Paolo a couple of weeks ago.
THE TEAM NEWS
GENOA
Alberto Gilardino will seek to name an unchanged eleven for this weekend’s clash but he will be without a couple of key players for the game in Genoa.
PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Martinez; Sabelli, Bani, Dragusin, Vasquez; Strootman, Badelj, Frendrup; Malinovsky, Gudmundsson; Retegui
UNAVAILABLE: Vogliacco (Injured), Matturo (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Pajac (Injured)
NAPOLI
Rudi Garcia has a slight injury concern over winger Matteo Politano, whilst back-up goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini, formerly of Aston Villa and Tottenham, is out.
PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Meret; Di Lorenzo, Rrahmani, Juan, Olivera; Anguissa, Lobotka, Zielinski; Raspadori, Osimhen, Kvaratskhelia
UNAVAILABLE: Gollini (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Politano (Injured)
THE PREDICTION
The hosts will see themselves as a little unfortunate to have only collected three points from their opening three matches. Genoa have made some interesting signings and generally performed well against tough opposition. They now welcome a Napoli side in a little bit of flux with the manager already becoming slightly agitated and some players’ futures up in the air. An entertaining match in which both teams score is most likely for this one.
TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
