THE LOWDOWN

FIORENTINA

Fiorentina reached two cup finals last season but were eventual runners’ up in both competitions with a defeat to West Ham United in the UEFA Europa Conference League final and then to Internazionale in the Italian Coppa Italia final. The hosts lost key players such as Igor and Sofyan Amrabat over the summer but have remained very impressive so far this season.

They have suffered just two defeats in eight matches across all competitions so far. They come into this on the back of a 1-1 draw against an impressive newly-promoted Frosinone last weekend, continuing a run of entertaining matches, too, in which both teams have scored in Fiorentina matches six of those nine games.

CAGLIARI

In an emotional playoff final, Cagliari returned to Serie A by defeating Bari at the end of the season with Claudio Ranieri in charge of the Sardinians. After a relatively quiet summer transfer window, they have started quite badly, though, at the start of this season with an immediate return to the second-tier seeming quite likely.

In six Serie A matches so far this season, Cagliari have collected just two points and a 3-1 defeat at home to AC Milan in midweek made it back-to-back losses for the visitors. Claudio Ranieri remains in charge of The Islanders but pressure is growing on the former Leicester boss as they sit rock-bottom ahead of this one.

THE PREDICTION

Despite the upcoming distraction of UEFA Europa Conference League group stage football against Hungarian champions Ferencvaros later on in the week, Fiorentina will expect to remain impressive in Serie A. The home team have suffered just one loss this season and have a deep squad they added to over the summer. Cagliari have badly struggled at the start of this year with a relegation fight always likely but the lack of goals and incision in attack leaves a lot to be desired and a comfortable Fiorentina win is expected at the Artemio Franchi.

TIP: FIORENTINA TO WIN
