A few years ago, in 2021, Empoli gained promotion to the top-flight of Italian football after an excellent campaign under the management of Alessio Dionisi. Dionisi left for Sassuolo but they have since comfortably survived in Serie A with back-to-back 14th placed finished, firstly with Aurelio Andreazzoli and then Paolo Zanetti. Andreazzoli has since replaced Zanetti this season.
Empoli began the season with five successive defeats but they have now collected seven points from their last four matches. They come into this on the back of a surprising and impressive 2-0 defeat of Fiorentina in their most recent outing, last weekend. They sit just outside of the bottom three and the relegation places after a much-improved run of form.
ATALANTA
The summer of 2023 saw another rejuvenation and regeneration of Atalanta as a football club as the Bergamasci managed to reinvest the money they gained from the sale of Rasmus Hojlund into the likes of Gianluca Scamacca, Charles De Ketelaere and El Bilal Toure from West Ham United, AC Milan and Almeria, respectively.
Under the management of Gian Piero Gasperini, Atalanta begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting just outside of the top five and the European spots. They come into this on the back of a 2-2 draw away to Sturm Graz in the group stages of the UEFA Europa League and have suffered just one loss in their last eight matches across all competitions.

The home team have rallied well to begin the weekend sitting outside of the bottom three and the relegation places. They now take on an Atalanta side that have not been the gung-ho side of the past for some time now but have really prioritised defending even more so this season. A low-scoring encounter with under 2.5 goals is likely.
