THE LOWDOWN

CAGLIARI

In dramatic circumstances, Cagliari gained promotion back to the top-flight at the first attempt last season, defeating Bari in the Serie B playoff final in June. The Sardinians have made some very interesting signings this summer but will still view survival as a success this year as they seek to rebuild their status as a Serie A stalwart.

With Claudio Ranieri in the dugout, albeit a pragmatist and flexible in terms of tactical systems, the former Leicester and Chelsea boss is likely to be quite solid and defensive-minded in charge of Cagliari in the top-flight, as he was in the second-tier. That stereotype was shown on the opening day of the season as they earned a creditable point in Turin, sharing a goalless draw away to Torino.

INTER MILAN

Internazionale began the 2023/24 season with a comfortable 2-0 defeat of Monza in their opening encounter at San Siro last weekend. With additions to the squad at either end of the pitch with Yann Sommer replacing Andre Onana in goal and Marcus Thuram arriving to bolster their forward options, the Nerazzurri once again look a strong outfit ahead of the Serie A campaign.

Lautaro Martinez began the season very well with a brace in that 2-0 victory last weekend and Inter, after reaching the UEFA Champions League final last season losing 1-0 to Manchester City, will be seeking to reclaim the Italian title which they last one with Antonio Conte in charge in 2021. Simone Inzaghi now has to prove he can do it in league play after also winning the Coppa Italia last season.

THE TEAM NEWS

CAGLIARI

Claudio Ranieri has a defensive plan for each match and that will have to precedence given he is missing two key attackers, Gianluca Lapadula and Marko Rog.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-3): Radunovic; Goldaniga, Dossena, Obert; Zappa, Sulemana, Makoumbou, Azzi; Nandez, Oristanio, Luvumbo

UNAVAILABLE: Lapadula (Injured), Mancosu (Injured), Rog (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

INTER MILAN

After a comfortable defeat of Monza in their opening match, Simone Inazghi is likely to name an unchanged side for this trip to Sardinia against Cagliari.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Sommer; Darmian, de Vrij, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Thuram, Martinez

THE PREDICTION

Claudio Ranieri’s Cagliari are likely to make it a difficult affair for the 2020/21 Italian champions with Internazionale in some sort of transition away from two key men. Ranieri’s Cagliari began with a goalless draw against Torino in Turin and, whilst Torino have often struggled for goals, that is a good indicator of what they will attempt to do throughout the campaign. Inter, though, with added options such as Carlos Augusto and Marko Arnautovic off the bench, should have enough to edge past the Sardinians.

TIP: INTER TO WIN & UNDER 3.5 GOALS
