THE LOWDOWN
BOLOGNA
Following the appointment of former Spezia coach and Paris Saint-Germain central midfielder Thiago Motta, Bologna enjoyed a very impressive end to last season to finish in the top-half and they now begin this weekend’s round of fixtures involved in the competition for the top four or five and the UEFA Champions League qualifying spots. They have had a dip in form during the calendar year of 2024.
The home team come into this on the back of a four-match winless run of form but they did manage to earn an important point at San Siro against AC Milan last week with Riccardo Orsolini scoring a second-half stoppage-time equaliser. They begin the weekend’s round of fixtures sitting three points behind Atalanta in fourth.
SASSUOLO
Former Empoli boss Alessio Dionisi is still under a little pressure in charge of Sassuolo and that has been the case for around 12-18 months due to a lack of consistency and failure to implement their proactive style of football. They begin this match day sitting in the bottom-half of the table and they are just one point clear of the bottom three and the relegation places.
They come into this one on the back of a slender 1-0 defeat away to Monza last weekend with Andrea Colpani scoring a 31st minute winner. Sassuolo have won just one victory in their last nine matches across all competitions with that one win coming against an out of form Fiorentina side earlier this year.
THE TEAM NEWS
BOLOGNA
Bologna continue to have a couple of injury concerns for the weekend’s visit of Sassuolo with Dan Ndoye a doubt and Adama Soumaoro out injured.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Skorupski; De Silvestri, Beukema, Calafiori, Kristiansen; Aebischer, Freuler; Fabbian, Ferguson, Urbanski; Zirkzee
UNAVAILABLE: Soumaoro (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Van Hooijdonk (Illness), Ndoye (Injured)
SASSUOLO
Sassuolo are missing midfielder Pedro Obiang due to injury, whilst Matheus Henrique is unavailable due to suspension. Jeremy Toljan is a doubt, too.
PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Consigli; Pedersen, Tressoldi, Ferrari, Doig; Thorstvedt, Mulattieri, Matheus Henrique; Samu Castillejo, Pinamonti, Lauriente
UNAVAILABLE: Matheus Henrique (Suspended), Obiang (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Toljan (Injured)
THE PREDICTION
These have both endured an inconsistent time of it, both in terms of performances and their results. However, the recent return of Joshua Zirkzee and their point against AC Milan last week will have Bologna heading into this weekend with a bit more confidence and, as a result of that as well as their home advantage, backing them looks the way to go for this one.
