THE LOWDOWN
ATALANTA
Ahead of the 2023/24 campaign, after re-investing the money raised by the sale of Rasmus Hojlund to Manchester United, Atalanta had been tipped up as potential dark horses for the Serie A title with Gian Piero Gasperini rebuilding an impressive Bergamasci side. However, after two matches of the campaign, there will already be slight concerns with the bare minimum ambition to finish back in the top four.
On the opening day of the season, they defeated Alessio Dionisi’s Sassuolo away from home with a comfortable 2-0 victory. Both of those goals, though, came late on via Charles De Ketelaere and Nicolo Zortea. However, they have followed that up with a very disappointing 2-1 loss away at newly-promoted Frosinone last weekend.
MONZA
Monza gained promotion to Serie A for the first time ever in 2022 but it is not quite the fairytale story it may seem with heavy influence from the late Silvio Berlusconi providing financial backing and genuine footballing expertise to their rise. I Biancorossi have continued their upward trajectory this summer and will be eyeing up a tilt at finishing in the top seven and the UEFA Europa Conference League places this season.
The visitors have begun the 2023/24 campaign with a 2-0 loss away to likely title challengers Internazionale and a 2-0 win at home to likely strugglers Empoli. They opened up the season by losing to Serie B side Reggiana in the first round of the Coppa Italia so will take a lot of much-needed confidence from their defeat of Empoli last weekend.

THE PREDICTION
Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta were viewed as outside contenders for the title this season but the Bergamasci have sort of showed why they may not be quite at that level with their loss to Frosinone last weekend. They remain a very strong and entertaining team, though, as they now take on another entertaining and ambitious side in Monza. Whilst the visitors will be buoyed by last week’s win, this is a tough test, especially away from home, and a high-scoring Atalanta win is expected for this one.
TIP: ATALANTA TO WIN & OVER 2.5 GOALS
