THE LOWDOWN

ATALANTA

Over the summer transfer window, Atalanta went through another evolution in their personnel and identity, overseen by long term manager Gian Piero Gasperini, who has been in charge of the Bergamasci since 2016. He brought in the likes of Charles De Ketelaere, Gianluca Scamacca and El Bilal Toure to reignite their fluency going forward.

That fluency has not necessarily been what has been so impressive about Atalanta so far this season but more their defensive solidity. They come into this on the back of an out of character 3-2 loss to Lazio before the international break but remain well in the hunt to reclaim a top four or five spot this season and earn UEFA Champions League qualification.

GENOA

Last season, Genoa gained promotion to the top-flight of Italian football after their relegation in 2022. They lost their manager, Alexander Blessin, mid-way through the campaign to Royale Union Saint-Gilloise but former Italy striker, Alberto Gilardino, saw them over the line as they became Serie B champions.

An impressive summer transfer window, which saw the likes of Ruslan Malinovskiy and Mateo Retegui arrive, has been followed by a fairly inconsistent start to the 2023/24 Serie A campaign. Their dramatic 1-0 defeat at home to AC Milan a couple of weeks ago means that they currently sit in the bottom-half of the table.

THE TEAM NEWS

ATALANTA

Atalanta will be without key midfielder Teun Koopmeiners due to injury, whilst summer signing El Bilal Toure remains a doubt for the match.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-1-2): Musso; Scalvini, Djimsiti, Kolasinac; Zappacosta, de Roon, Ederson, Ruggeri; Pasalic; De Ketelaere, Scamacca

UNAVAILABLE: Koopmeiners (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Toure (Injured)

GENOA

Genoa are without key men such as Josep Martinez and Junior Messias, as well as striker Mateo Retegui remaining a doubt for this weekend’s trip to Bergamo.

PREDICTED XI (4-5-1): Leali; De Winter, Bani, Dragusin, Vasquez; Sabelli, Thorsby, Frendrup, Malinovskiy, Haps; Gudmundsson

UNAVAILABLE: Martinez (Suspended), Messias (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Retegui (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

This is quite an intriguing battle because Atalanta, despite having the personnel and certainly the manager to play a more fluent and free flowing style of football, have been a little underwhelming in the way they have gone about their latest ‘evolution’. They take on a Genoa side that gained promotion with a little bit of expectation around them but have also slightly underperformed those pre-season expectations. Atalanta are favourites, especially at home, but in a game whereby both sides could do with upping the attacking intensity, it could be quite entertaining.

TIP: ATALANTA TO WIN & OVER 2.5 GOALS
