THE TEAM NEWS

ECUADOR

  • Ecuador are coming off a big 3-0 win over Trinidad & Tobago in their most recent friendly match, and they are on a good run of form in recent months. Following a disastrous 2019 Copa America campaign (D1, L2), Ecuador have won three of their last four matches while using a relatively young squad, with several players 25 years old or younger.
  • Names such as Junior Sornoza, Erick Castillo, Miller Bolanos and Jackson Porozo, to name a few, have not been included in the squad for this game. Ecuador have suspended several players due to behaviour issues, and they are in the midst of a long-term rebuilding process.

Expected Starting XI: Pedro Ortíz; Xavier Arreaga, Félix Torres, Marcos López, Diego Palacios; Jefferson Orejuela, Jhegson Méndez; Renato Ibarra, Ángel Mena, Gonzalo Plata; Enner Valencia

COLOMBIA

  • Los Cafeteros have struggled badly following a 2019 Copa America campaign where they lost in the quarterfinals against Chile. Since then, Colombia are W1, D3, L1 although they have gone scoreless in three of those matches. They are coming off a win, however, as they defeated Peru 1-0 the last time out thanks to a stoppage-time goal from Alfredo Morelos.
  • Colombia will be without Johan Mojica due to injury, and the same can be said about three of the country’s most important players. James Rodriguez, Radamel Falcao and Duvan Zapata have all been ruled out through injury, meaning Colombia will be quite short on the attacking end.

Expected Starting XI: David Ospina; Santiago Arias, Davinson Sanchez, Yerry Mina, Frank Fabra; Juan Guillermo Cuadrado, Wilmar Barrios, Mateus Uribe; Luis Muriel, Alfredo Morelos, Roger Martínez

THE PREDICTION

Ecuador have looked better in terms of recent form but they have a young, inexperienced squad ahead of this contest since they are building a team for the future, not just to compete during the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. Colombia have not had good results in recent months, but they have gone undefeated in four of their last five games and boast a huge advantage when it comes to international experience. That should be enough reason to see Colombia as favourites ahead of this contest.
