THE TEAM NEWS
ARGENTINA
- Argentina are probably on the best run of form they have been for a while. Following their third-place finish in the 2019 Copa America, La Albiceleste have gone undefeated in their five friendly matches afterwards and are coming off a huge 1-0 win over Brazil in Riyadh this past Friday.
- Argentina’s lone big absentee will be the one of Franco Armani, who was left back home so he can prepare for the 2019 Copa Libertadores final with River Plate. Lionel Messi should start once again after scoring the game-winning goal against Brazil the last time out. La Albiceleste do not have other injuries to report.
Expected Starting XI: Esteban Andrada; Juan Foyth, Germán Pezzella, Nicolás Otamendi, Nicolás Tagliafico; Rodrigo De Paul, Leandro Paredes, Giovani Lo Celso; Lionel Messi; Lucas Alario, Lautaro Martínez
URUGUAY
- Uruguay are also on a thrilling run of form ahead of this contest. Los Charruas recently defeated Hungary 2-1 this past Friday, and they remain undefeated this calendar year. During 2019, Oscar Washington Tabarez’s men have gone W8, D4 (90 minutes only) and have conceded one or fewer goals just once over that span.
- Los Charruas, however, will have several absences ahead of this match. Nahitán Nandez, Giorgian De Arrascaeta, Jonathan Rodríguez and Darwin Núñez have all been removed from the squad due to injury. The same goes for José María Giménez, who continues to recover from an injury sustained several weeks ago.
Expected Starting XI: Fernando Muslera; Giovanni González, Diego Godín, Sebastián Coates, Matías Viña; Brian Rodríguez, Federico Valverde, Rodrigo Bentancur, Brian Lozano; Luis Suárez, Edinson Cavani
THE PREDICTION
Argentina versus Uruguay is probably the second biggest rivalry in the CONMEBOL region, and the matches between these two sides tend to be quite intense. Argentina have the edge in the recent H2H record – W3, D1, L1 over the last five – and they are far healthier than Uruguay. Los Charruas are missing some key players ahead of this tie such as Nandez and Gimenez. Plus, Argentina are on a great run of form since they average over 4.0 goals scored in their last four friendlies. All things considered, Argentina should win here.
