THE TEAM NEWS

KAISERSLAUTERN

  • Kaiserslautern may be languishing in the third tier these days but they have great history in the DFB Cup having won it twice and reached the final on five occasions, most recently in 2003.
  • Christian Kuhlwetter is fit again after missing last weekend’s trip to Preussen Munster and summer signing Simon Skarlatidis could make his debut, but striking duo Lukas Spalvis and Andri Runar Bjarnason are among those on the injury list.
  • Coach Sascha Hildmann has deployed a 4-1-4-1 formation in Lautern’s four games this season and is expected to do so again, with Timmy Thiele leading the line.

MAINZ 05

  • Mainz enjoyed a relatively comfortable season in the Bundesliga in 2018/19 and will be looking to go into the new campaign on the back of a victory over local rivals Kaiserslautern.
  • The club completed their transfer business this week with the signing of centre-back Jeremiah St. Juste and Liverpool loanee Taiwo Awoniyi, although neither is expected to feature in this match.
  • Coach Stefan Schwartz has lost strikers Jean-Philippe Mateta and Dong-won Ji to long-term injuries while summer signing Edimilson Fernandes is set to take the place of the departed Jean-Philippe Gbamin.

THE PREDICTION

As a local derby, this encounter is certainly a potential banana skin but Mainz should pass the test. It will be a strong, familiar line-up that takes to the field at the Fritz-Walter-Stadion and they should prevail against a club that have been through troubled times in recent years.
