THE LOWDOWN

RB LEIPZIG

After clinically dispatching Bayern Munich by three goals to nil in the DFL-Supercup, expectations were high within RB Leipzig’s camp heading into the opening round of the Bundesliga. However, a defensive performance that was the polar opposite of what Marco Rose’s side displayed in Munich, ultimately cost them against Bayer Leverkusen, ‘Die Roten Bullen’ losing 3-2 in a thrilling contest.

Spaniard Dani Olmo continued his red-hot form in front of goal to draw Leipzig level after conceding the opening goal, but Rose’s men found themselves 3-1 down in the second half. New signing Loic Openda pulled one back on his Bundesliga debut with just under 20 minutes of normal time remaining and missed a golden opportunity to draw his side level.

STUTTGART

After surviving last season’s relegation play-off, Stuttgart came into the new campaign with newfound belief and optimism under Sebastian Hoeness. Momentum can prove a powerful tool and Stuttgart fans now find themselves in dreamland, sitting proudly top of the Bundesliga after a stunning 5-0 thrashing of Bochum, their relegation rivals last season.

The permanent signing of Serhou Guirassy is already looking like €9m very well spent as the Guinean forward picked up where he left off in 2022-23, bagging a brace as Hoeness’ side took Bochum apart offensively. Silas Katompa Mavumpa also scored twice, whilst Dan-Axel Zagadou got in on the act from central defence.

THE TEAM NEWS

RB LEIPZIG

It will be interesting to see if Rose is tempted into making changes following that disappointing result in Leverkusen. Timo Werner could be one to drop out and whilst new signing Benjamin Sesko is doubtful through injury, Yussuf Poulsen could come into the starting line-up to partner Openda up top.

Goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi remains out, as does midfielder Amadou Haidara. RB Leipzig have shut down any prospect of Dani Olmo leaving the club this summer amid rumours of interest from Champions League winners Man City and he will continue to start for the club.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-2-2): Blaswich; Henrichs, Simikan, Orban, Raum; Seiwald, Schlager; Simons, Olmo; Poulsen, Openda

UNAVAILABLE: Gulacsi (Injured), Haidara (Injured), Bitshiabu (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Sesko (Injured)

STUTTGART

Following such a magnificent result and performance, the expectation is that Hoeness won’t look to adjust his starting line-up and who can blame him after last weekend. Guirassy will lead the line again with the dangerous Mvumpa out wide and Chris Fuhrich on the opposite side.

Following the departure of Wataru Endo to Liverpool, Enzo Millot and Atakan Karazor started together and central midfield and should do so again here. However, as it stands none of Stuttgart’s injured players will return in time for this match.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Nubel; Stenzel, Anton, Zagadou, Ito; Karazor, Millot; Mvumpa, Woo-Yeong, Fuhrich; Guirassy

UNAVAILABLE: Bredlow (Injured), Nartey (Injured), Ulrich (Injured), Undav (Injured), Vagnoman (Injured), Kastanaras (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

When you consider that five goals were scored across the two Bundesliga fixtures involving RB Leipzig and Stuttgart last weekend, the expectation is that an exciting contest is in prospect with plenty of action within each penalty area. Stuttgart are riding the crest of a wave and under Hoeness, won’t be afraid to take the game to RB Leipzig offensively. However, the hosts remain a formidable unit who should win far more games than they lose this season. With home advantage in their favour, a strong response from the Leipzig players looks very much on the cards. Back RB Leipzig to win, but also for both teams to score.

TIP: RB LEIPZIG TO WIN AND BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
