THE LOWDOWN

BAYER LEVERKUSEN

When you win a league title, often you look back at certain fixtures across the season that clearly played a massive part in your team going onto lift the trophy. If Bayer Leverkusen end the 2023-24 campaign as Bundesliga champions, then their incredible 2-3 triumph over RB Leipzig last Saturday will be one of those fixtures.

Falling behind twice against a title rival, without their best XI on the pitch through injury/internationals, Xabi Alonso and Leverkusen found a way, equalising on both occasions before centre-back Piero Hincapie popped up in the 91st minute to win the game. It was the biggest goal of the Bundesliga campaign so far, even more so following Bayern Munich shock loss to Werder Bremen the following day.

BORUSSIA MONCHENGLADBACH

Borussia Monchengladbach fell to a 1-2 loss on their own patch last Sunday against Augsburg, further underlining the frustration and inconsistency that has stunted their progress all season. Five wins, five draws and eight defeats from 18 Bundesliga games tells you the story and it leaves them firmly stuck in midtable.

Just one win from their last five matches is a concern, as is their recently defensive fragility, with an average of two goals conceded per game over the course of those five fixtures, including no clean sheets. It doesn’t bode well for them coming into this one against an attack of Bayer Leverkusen’s quality.

THE PREDICTION

Back at home, Bayer Leverkusen will be strong favourites to maintain their unbeaten streak across the entire season in all competitions, even with the players they have missing. Victor Boniface has been replaced by Borja Iglesias and although the Real Betis striker is unlikely to sign in time to feature vs Gladbach, Patrik Schick is more than capable of leading the line. Complimented by Wirtz, Hofmann et all, expect another dominant Leverkusen performance and most importantly, another three points.
