AUGSBURG PREVIEW: MAINTAIN STABILITY AND STAY OUT OF TROUBLE

Augsburg ended 2023-24 comfortably clear of relegation, finishing a whole six points above the bottom three in 11th-place, but sustaining that high-a-finish won’t be easy when considering the likes of Wolfsburg, Borussia Monchengladbach and Union Berlin will all be eying up significantly improved campaigns.

After recording ten wins in the Bundesliga across their 34 games, matching or even exceeding that figure serves as a realistic target for Jess Thorup and his side, but to do so their home form will need to be very good.

WERDER BREMEN PREVIEW: EUROPE A REALISTIC GOAL FOR WERDER.

Werder Bremen were so unlucky to miss out in European qualification last season, with goal difference seeing them miss out. Their -6 goal difference was bettered by Heidenheim’s -5, an agonising pill to swallop for Ole Werner’s squad. However, such a close call must serve as motivation for the upcoming campaign.

As it stands, Werder’s transfer business has been relatively quiet but the likes of Skelly Alvero and Keke Topp have both been purchased for significant seven-figure-fees. On the flip-side, they’ve lost Eren Dinkci, who was sold to Freiburg for a reported fee of €5m.

AUGSBURG TEAM NEWS: MOUNIE HOPING TO SHAKE OFF ILLNESS

Provided striker Steve Mounie overcomes illness, he could command a place in the starting line-up ahead of either Essende or Tietz, whilst midfielder Fredrik Jensen is a significant injury doubt. Goalkeeper Finn Dahmen and right-back Robert Gumny are both out.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-1-2): Labrovic; Wolf, Gouweleeuw, Schlotterbeck, Giannoulis; Engels, Jakic, Maier; Jensen; Essende, Tietz

UNAVAILABLE: Dahmen (Injured), Gumny (Injured), Oxford (Illness)

QUESTIONABLE: Jensen (Injured), Mounie (Illness)

WERDER BREMEN TEAM NEWS: FAVOURED 3-5-2 EXPECTED AGAIN FOR WERDER

Werder are expected to be without both centre-back Amos Pieper and midfielder Dikeni Salifou, each of whom are nursing injuries. Ole Werner will likely stick with his favoured 3-5-2 formation, which could see Marvin Ducksch and Justin Njinmah be pair up in attack.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Zetterer; Stark, Veljkovic, Friedl; Weiser, Lynen, Stage, Schmid, Agu; Ducksch, Njinmah

UNAVAILABLE: Pieper (Injured), Salifou (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

AUGSBURG VS WERDER BREMEN PREDICTION

This match is of huge importance to both sides but with Augsburg being at home, not winning would probably be seen as a worse result for them than it would for Werder Bremen. However, Werder are a tough nut to crack and pose a substantial threat themselves from an attacking point of view, which will require Augsburg to proceed with an element of caution.

When factoring in the importance of points of the board early on, neither will want to get off to a losing start and that may lead to a cagey affair on the opening weekend. Therefore, backing the draw looks a potentially smart move here and should be seriously considered.
