AUGSBURG PREVIEW: HEIDENHEIM THRASHING SETS ALARM BELLS RINGING

Augsburg are likely to have been content with beginning the season by putting a point on the board, drawing 2-2 with Werder Bremen. However, to then be thrashed 4-0 at the hands of Heidenheim the following weekend was a sobering reminder as to why so many have predicted Augsburg to struggle across the 2024-25 campaign.

Playing on their own turf, Augsburg need to rally against St. Pauli and with the home crowd behind them, they’ll hope to mark the Heidenheim defeat as a watershed moment. It’s fair to say that everyone will forget that result very quickly with three points here.

ST. PAULI PREVIEW: EUROPE A REALISTIC GOAL FOR WERDER.

St. Pauli were expected to find the transition to the top flight difficult after such a long period away and losing their head coach prior to the start of the season. Unfortunately for them, that has proved to be the case when considering that Alexander Blessin’s side are not only without a point so far in the Bundesliga, but they are also yet to score.

Playing away from home may help them in a slight way as it allows them to perhaps play with less expectation on their shoulders and slightly more freedom with the pressure on Augsburg to break them down.

AUGSBURG TEAM NEWS: THREE OUT FOR HOME SIDE

Augsburg will be missing three players for this contest with Dahmen, Gumny and Oxford all unavailable. Expect Vargas to play behind a front two, which will most likely be Samuel Essende and Phillip Tietz.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-1-2): Labrovic; Wolf, Gouweleeuw, Schlotterbeck, Giannoulis; Rexhbecaj, Jakic, Maier; Vargas; Essende, Tietz

UNAVAILABLE: Dahmen (Injured), Gumny (Injured), Oxford (Illness)

ST. PAULI TEAM NEWS: BLESSIN WAITS ON METCALFE DECISION

St. Pauli face a nervous wait regarding Australian international Connor Metcalfe, who is struggling with a muscle problem and could miss out here. If so, he would join the likes of Ahlers, Burchert and Zoller on the sidelines.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Vasilj; Wahl, Smith, Mets; Saliakas, Wagner, Irvine, Boukhalfa, Treu; Eggestein, Guilavogui

UNAVAILABLE: Ahlers (Injured), Burchert (Injured), Zoller (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Metcalfe (Injured)

AUGSBURG VS ST. PAULI PREDICTION

Something has to give here where Augsburg and St. Pauli are concerned. Both will be desperate to gain three points, but each will no doubt be well aware of the ramifications a defeat would bring. With that in mind, we could see a nervy and ultimately turgid affair here. The result could go either way, but it would be no surprise if neither can be separated in the end with both unwilling to risk losing by pushing too many bodies forward.
