THE PREDICTION

The two teams go into this play-off with contrasting feelings. While Koln scored a last-minute winner against Schalke on Saturday to avoid automatic relegation, Holstein Kiel squandered a 1-0 lead and second place in Bundesliga 2 on Sunday, losing 3-2 to Darmstadt. They do not have long to get over that disappointment, although Ole Werner’s side are used to playing every few days at the moment as this will be their 10th fixture in the space of just over a month. It may be that they are just running out of steam, and on top of that they are missing key midfield duo Jonas Meffert and Alexander Muhling through suspension for this first leg. Koln look in better shape overall so it should be the Bundesliga team who come out on top.
