THE PREDICTION

It was heartbreak for Hamburger SV in their promotion/relegation play-off against Hertha Berlin this past May, which saw club legend Felix Magath guide Hertha to safety and sentence his former club to a fifth successive season in the 2. Bundesliga. Two months on and Tim Walter’s side must go again, starting with a trip to Eintracht Braunschweig. Promotion to the second tier of German football unlocks significant rewards for any club and the visit of a club the size of Hamburg is testament to that. Former Bundesliga winners Braunschweig boasts some great history of its own though and certainly aren’t in the 2. Bundesliga to make up the numbers after bouncing straight back up following relegation in 2020-21. However, in Hamburg they face a quality unit who are unsurprisingly heavily fancied to gain automatic promotion. Any outcome other than an away win in this one would be considered a surprise.
