THE LOWDOWN

TOULOUSE

Toulouse gained promotion back to Ligue 1 in 2022 but, despite that, they performed extremely well last season. With AC Milan being something of an affiliate club, behind the scenes business at the club has been very impressive and should be credited in part with their top-half finish last season boosted by winning the Coupe de France and qualifying for the group stages of the UEFA Europa League for this season.

The home team began the 2023/24 Ligue 1 campaign with a continuation of their impressive form from last season by winning away at Nantes on the opening day. They fell behind early on to a Mostafa Mohamed penalty but a Zakaria Aboukhlal equaliser mid-way through the second-half was followed by Rasmus Nicolaisen scoring a stoppage-time winner to start the season in style.

PSG

Last weekend, Paris Saint-Germain broke the record for the most passes in a Ligue 1 match but they were eventually held to a goalless draw with Lorient – that is a very similar sort of thing as to what happened with Spain at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Spain are mentioned because they, like PSG are now, were coached by former Barcelona boss Luis Enrique.

It has been yet another summer of upheaval and uncertainty in the French capital. It does appear now that Kylian Mbappe will remain at Parc des Princes and with several very impressive signings, and another striker still wanted following the departures of both Lionel Messi and Neymar, they do appear set up for what could be a promising season if the circus calms down. Luis Enrique is an excellent coach and when he has efficient forwards, his sides can be exhilarating; it will likely be dependant on when, as mentioned, the circus calms down and things become more settled.

THE TEAM NEWS

TOULOUSE

Under the management of former Barcelona youth coach Carles Martinez Novell, who replaced former Nottingham Forest manager Philippe Montanier over the summer, Toulouse are expected to play a fluent and attacking 4-3-3 system and, following last week’s victory as well as having no fresh injury concerns, they are likely to remain unchanged for this one.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Restes; Desler, Costa, Nicolaisen, Diarra; Sierro, Casseres Jr, Genreau; Aboukhlal, Dallinga, Suazo

UNAVAILABLE: Cissoko (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

PSG

The visitors are also expected to play a fluent and attacking 4-3-3 system. A PSG debut could be handed to Ousmane Dembele and it does seem as though Kylian Mbappe is likely to be welcomed back into the side and that very much should and could change things in attack in terms of their profligacy from last week.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Donnarumma; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Skriniar, Hernandez; Zaire-Emery, Ugarte, Vitinha; Dembele, Ramos, Mbappe

UNAVAILABLE: Rico (Injured), Letellier (Injured), Mukiele (Injured), Kimpembe (Injured), Mendes (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Bernat (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Both of these sides found themselves frustrated last weekend but Toulouse managed to come through that and win, whereas PSG were held. Despite that, though, there were positive signs for the visitors and given the recent signings and re-integration of certain key players, the lack of goals is very, very unlikely to ever really be a problem again. Toulouse may well feel they can exploit space in the visitors’ defence but this should be Paris Saint-Germain’s opening win of the campaign this Saturday evening.

TIP: PSG TO WIN & OVER 1.5 GOALS
