THE LOWDOWN

TOULOUSE

Toulouse gained promotion back to the top-flight in 2022 and had a successful first season back in France’s Ligue 1. They managed to win the Coupe de France, subsequently qualifying for the group stages of the UEFA Europa League, and also comfortably survived the drop. This time around, though, things look a little more difficult.

In all competitions so far this season, Toulouse have managed just one win in seven matches and that victory came on the opening day of the season against a Nantes side that they defeated in the aforementioned Coupe de France final. They were edged out by a struggling Lens side by two goals to one, last weekend.

METZ

Metz gained promotion to the French top flight last season in relatively controversial circumstances on the final day of the campaign ahead of Bordeaux. In a more competitive Ligue 1 the visitors will simply be seeing any route to survival as a successful campaign. However, they have made an interesting start to the season with some performances beyond what had initially been expected of them.

The visitors have enjoyed two victories, shared two draws and suffered two defeats in their opening six matches of the 2023/24 campaign. Under the management of Laszlo Boloni, they had enjoyed a four-match unbeaten run of form after their 5-1 shellacking by Rennes on the opening day before losing 1-0 at home to Strasbourg last weekend.

THE TEAM NEWS

TOULOUSE

Toulouse could well see the unavailable list creep up with their UEFA Europa League involvement but it remains quite steady ahead of this weekend’s visit of Metz.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Restes; Keben, Diarra, Nicolaisen, Suazo; Casseres Jr, Schmidt; Kamanzi, Gelabert, Genreau; Dallinga

UNAVAILABLE: Aboukhlal (Injured), Skytta (Injured), Zanden (Injured), Cissoko (Injured)

METZ

Metz will be able to name an unchanged eleven for this weekend’s trip to Toulouse with no fresh injury doubts but they will remain without former Birmingham defender Maxine Colin.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Oukidja; Kouao, Herelle, Cande, Udol; Jacques, N’Doram; Asoro, Camara, Sabaly; Estupinan

UNAVAILABLE: Nduquidi (Injured), Traore (Injured), Colin (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

This is a match between a team that have just gained promotion going away to the current French cup holders - it is not necessarily the foregone conclusion that would suggest, though. Toulouse have the added distraction of a game against LASK in Europe in midweek and there will be a few concerns as they are winless in six matches since the opening day. Metz, on the other hand, have shown a capability to be in every single game since their opening day loss to Rennes and a double chance bet in their favour looks like good value.

TIP: DOUBLE CHANCE - METZ TO WIN OR DRAW
