THE LOWDOWN

RENNES

Ever since the return of Julian Stephan to the club in the November international break, replacing former Olympique Lyonnais boss Bruno Genesio, Stade Rennais have been much-improved as they attempted to propel themselves into the top six and the European qualification spots but they are now coming under major pressure, once again.

They have drifted firmly back into the middle-of-the-table as they come into this one on the back of a 1-0 loss to Monaco at Stade Louis II last weekend, just a few days after losing to Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals of the Coupe de France. That means they have won just one of their last six matches across all competitions.

TOULOUSE

The issue for Toulouse throughout this season has been being able to balance Ligue 1 and UEFA Europa League action with a small-ish squad, having qualified for the UEFA Europa League group stages way ahead of schedule as a result of winning the Coupe de France last season but their elimination from that competition has allowed them to since move back firmly into mid-table.

Toulouse come into this one on the back of a goalless draw at home to another in-form side in Strasbourg in their most recent outing, last weekend. That means Toulouse have now suffered just two defeats in their last eight matches across all competitions as they try and propel themselves comfortably clear of any sort of relegation battle.

THE PREDICTION

At the turn of the year, Rennes were in the hunt for European qualification and also in the UEFA Europa League knockout playoffs, as well as enjoying a cup run. Now, though, they must solely focus on trying to push themselves to the top six. Toulouse’s focus remains on avoiding the drop, despite their improved run of form. Both teams have scored and conceded over a goal per game so far this season and both teams scoring would therefore appear a good bet for this one.
