THE LOWDOWN

RENNES

Stade Rennais, owned by the Pinot family, lost a few key players in the summer transfer window, such as Lovro Majer to Wolfsburg and Jeremy Doku to Manchester City, but continued to invest relatively heavily into the squad after qualifying for Europe last season and they will be expected to built upon that top five finish, once again.

The home team come into this on the back of a 1-0 loss away to Villarreal at El Madrigal in the group stages of the UEFA Europa League during the week. Rennes begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting outside of the top five after a frustrating start to the season in which they have won two and drawn five of their opening seven matches so far.

PSG

Over the summer, Paris Saint-Germain began a rejuvenation of their squad and general ethos with lots of younger players coming in and trying to transition to a French-led squad with the departures of Neymar and Lionel Messi. Luis Enrique has a specific style of football but the former Barcelona and Spain boss is suffering from similar issues that his Spain side had at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

In nine matches across all competitions so far this season, the defending champions have managed just four victories and they come into this on the back of being hammered by four goals to one by Newcastle United at St James’ Park in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League in midweek. They were held to a goalless draw against struggling Clermont last weekend in Ligue 1.

THE PREDICTION

Rennes have proven themselves to be very difficult to beat so far this season as the only unbeaten side remaining in Ligue 1. They will look to head into the October international break with that record still intact so could end up playing a fairly reserved style of football against the champions. The champions will find that very irritating as they have struggled to break teams down throughout the campaign, as shown by a goalless draw with Clermont last weekend. Rennes will seek to frustrate their opposition and a low-scoring encounter is to be expected.
