THE LOWDOWN

RENNES

In the November international break, former coach Julien Stephan returned to replace Bruno Genesio and things did immediately improve for Stade Rennais but there remained some inconsistency. They have drawn seven of their 17 matches so far this season, keeping them trapped firmly in the middle-of-the-table.

The home team come into this one on the back of a comfortable 2-0 defeat of Guingamp in the Coupe de France in their most recent outing, last weekend, returning from the winter break. That followed on from comfortably defeating Clermont by three goals to one in mid-December before the stoppage.

NICE

The appointment of Francesco Farioli in the summer appeared to be a risky one but the southerners have very much overperformed their pre-season expectations as they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting firmly tucked inside the top three and the UEFA Champions League qualification spots.

They did endure a bit of an inconsistent run of form before the Ligue 1 winter break, though, with two defeats in four matches before the stoppage. The visitors did return from the winter break with another unconvincing performance, sharing a goalless draw with Auxerre and requiring a penalty shootout to get through.

THE PREDICTION

Rennes lost the likes of Lovro Majer and Jeremy Doku but they could well re-invest in the January transfer window as they aim for a top six finish and a return to European football this season. They are improving and have been entertaining with their 17 games consisting of 45 goals so far this season. They now face a Nice side that, like they did against Auxerre last weekend, have struggled for goals throughout the campaign. They have scored just 19 in 17 games, despite sitting in the top three. That lack of goals and the fact Rennes’ matches have been less than three per game, despite being relatively entertaining, would suggest another low-scoring encounter.
