THE LOWDOWN
REIMS
Will Still’s reputation grew throughout last season as he led Stade de Reims on a long unbeaten run up the table and eventually tailing off to finish in the middle. Despite the loss of loanee Folarin Balogun over the summer, Reims have made some interesting additions this summer, spending quite heavily, too, with over £50 million spent.
They began the season with a loss away to Marseille but quickly found their feet this season. The campaign has been slightly marred by the odd blip, including a 2-1 defeat at home to current league leaders Brest but the home team come into this on the back of a 2-1 win away to Lille as they begin the weekend sitting inside the top five of the Ligue 1 table.
LYON
Owner John Textor has his work cut out at Olympique Lyonnais. Laurent Blanc discussed how much of a mess the club was in over the summer and suggested he be sacked on more than one occasion. After a terrible start to the campaign he was sacked and replaced by former Frosinone boss Fabio Grosso but things have not yet improved at Parc OL.
They come into this on the back of yet another defeat, losing 1-0 to Brest last weekend. That means they have begun the 2023/24 Ligue 1 campaign with two draws and four defeats in their opening six matches as they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the bottom two and the automatic relegation places.
THE TEAM NEWS
REIMS
Reims don’t have too many injury or suspension concerns but they will be without on-loan full-back Josh Wilson-Esbrand, who is missing from this one due to injury.

QUESTIONABLE:
LYON
Captain Alexandre Lacazette is among three certain absentees for Lyon this weekend with long-term injured defender Dejan Lovren missing alongside Henrique.
PREDICTED XI (4-1-4-1): Lopes; Kumbedi, Mata, Diomande, Tagliafico; Akouokou; Nuamah, Caqueret, Tolisso, Moreira; Kadewere
UNAVAILABLE: Lacazette (Suspended), Henrique (Injured), Lovren (Injured)

THE PREDICTION
Reims have a famous and storied past in French football but many neutral observers would view this game as, surely, a step too far against a giant of Ligue 1. However, right now, it would be a genuine surprise if Reims allowed Lyon a sniff of this match, let alone the opportunity to take any points. Grosso may well begin to get Lyon playing but it wouldn’t be a surprise if that doesn’t happen until after the international break so, especially with home advantage, Reims are firm favourites for this one.
