THE LOWDOWN
NANTES
Nantes won the Coupe de France in 2022 and eventually reached the knockout stages of the UEFA Europa League as a result. Then, in 2023, they reached the final again, losing to Toulouse. Whilst these cup excursions continued, their league form fell off a cliff and they only narrowly escaped relegation to Ligue 2 on the final day of the campaign, finishing a point above Auxerre in the bottom four.
With Ligue 1 being reduced from 20 to 18 teams, they will now be worried that another season of underperformance will not be as forgiven this time around and they could well find themselves going down. Under the management of Pierre Aristouy, Nantes have started the 2023/24 campaign with back-to-back defeats, losing 2-1 at home to Toulouse on the opening day of the season and then that being followed up with a 2-0 loss at Lille.
MONACO
Under the management of former Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Monchengladbach manager Adi Hutter, AS Monaco have started the 2023/24 Ligue 1 campaign very impressively. With PSG faltering and having a hectic summer, there is an opening for someone to really challenge and given the impressive and ambitious business that the Monagasque have done this summer, they could well be that realistic challenger.
The principality club come into this on the back of back-to-back defeats and are one of just two teams, alongside Stade Brest, to have opened up with two victories. Their most recent outing was a 3-0 hammering of a seemingly resurgent, at least financially, Strasbourg, which followed up a 4-2 win over Clermont on the opening day of the season.
THE TEAM NEWS
NANTES
Nantes are without two of their key first-team players due to injury with goalkeeper Alban Lafont still out injured, from an injury suffered on the opening day of the season against Toulouse, as well as Ignatius Ganago.
PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Descamps; Pierre-Gabriel, Castelletto, Pallois; Coco, Chirivella, Augusto, Merlin; Simon, Mollet; Mohamed
UNAVAILABLE: Ganago (Injured), Centonze (Injured), Zeze (Injured), Lafont (Injured)

MONACO
Adi Hutter remains without new signing Mohammed Salisu due to injury and he is also missing his key striker, Swiss international Breel Embolo, due to injury but they have both missed their impressive start to this season anyway.
PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Kohn; Singo, Zakaria, Magassa; Vanderson, Fofana, Camara, Henrique; Takumi, Golovin; Ben Yedder
UNAVAILABLE: Salisu (Injured), Diop (Injured), Okou (Injured), Embolo (Injured)

THE PREDICTION
Pierre Aristouy, appointed just this summer having previously been in charge of the Nantes B and Nantes U19 teams, will already be starting to feel the pressure after two losses from two. Now his side face the most impressive side from the opening two matches in Ligue 1. The controversial consistent selection of Wissam Ben Yedder, let alone staying as captain, following his rape charge, leaves a cloud over Monaco’s start to the season but they will stull head to Stade de la Beaujoire as firm favourites and will expect to win given the form that they are in.
TIP: MONACO TO WIN
