THE LOWDOWN

NANTES

Nantes went into the winter break of the Ligue 1 season sitting in the bottom-half of the table with five victories, three draws and nine losses in their 17 matches so far this season. Jocelyn Gourvennec replaced Pierre Aristouy towards the end of November but performances and results did not improve.

They went into the stoppage on the back of a 1-0 loss away to Olympique Lyonnais, which was their third successive defeat in France’s top-flight after losses to Paris Saint-Germain and Stade Brest. They did return from the winter break with a much-needed 4-1 hammering of Pau in the Coupe de France, last weekend.

CLERMONT

Ever since they gained promotion to the top-flight a few years ago, Clermont have been red hot favourites to be relegated but the visitors have consistently overperformed. However, still under the management of Pascal Gastien, Clermont begin the second-half of the campaign sitting rock-bottom and seemingly destined to finish in the bottom two this season.

The visitors come into this one on the back of a 1-1 draw with Metz in the Round of 64 of the Coupe de France in their most recent outing, last weekend, before edging past Metz on penalties. However, prior to the winter break, they suffered a 3-1 defeat at home to Stade Rennais and they are now winless in their last six matches.

THE PREDICTION

Nantes are not necessarily a team that should be backed wholeheartedly, even with home advantage, and there is pressure growing on Jocelyn Gourvennec already. The home team were Coupe de France winners in 2022 and runners’ up in 2023 but they are set to be an also ran all over this time around. They face, though, a Clermont side destined for the drop. Both teams have been hit quite badly with international callups so a game that lacks any fluency and rhythm is to be expected, regardless of whoever comes out on top.
