THE LOWDOWN

METZ

Following their controversial promotion back to the top-flight last season, Metz will remain one of the favourites to be relegated this season, especially with Ligue 1 being reduced from 20 to 18 teams. They, under the management of Laszlo Boloni, have low expectations but they have started the campaign quite well this season.

They come into this on the back of a surprise 1-0 win against last season’s runners’ up Lens in their most recent outing, last weekend. They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the top-half of the 18-team table. In their opening five matches of the campaign, they have managed two victories with two draws and just one defeat so far.

STRASBOURG

Over the summer, the historic and storied club of Strasbourg were bought as, more or less, a feeder club for Premier League side Chelsea. Fan protests haven’t prevented anything from happening and Todd Boehly, leading Clearlake Capital, has parked players such as Angelo with the Ligue 1 club. They have spent more money than they would have anticipated, though, on the likes of Abakar Sylla.

Under the management of former Crystal Palace and Nice boss Patrick Vieira, Strasbourg began the 2023/24 Ligue 1 campaign with an unconvincing 2-1 defeat of crisis club Olympique Lyonnais. Since then they have managed just one win in four matches and begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the bottom-half of the table.

THE TEAM NEWS

METZ

Laszlo Boloni will have to contend with several injuries this weekend with both Maxine Colin and Benjamin Tetteh missing from this encounter.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Oukidja; Kouao, Herelle, Cande, Udol; N’Duquidi, N’Doram; Asoro, Camara, Sabaly; Estupinan

UNAVAILABLE: Traore (Injured), Colin (Injured), Mbaye (Injured), Tetteh (Injured)

STRASBOURG

Patrick Vieira is coping with three injuries but none of those absentees are overly important and they will be expected to name an unchanged eleven this weekend.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Sels; Guilbert, Nyamsi, Perrin, Delaine; Doukoure, Sissoko; Angelo, Sahi, Diarra; Gameiro

UNAVAILABLE: Fila (Injured), Chahiri (Injured), Bastian (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Following promotion last season, Metz will be pleased with their start to the campaign as they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures in mid-table. They have been particularly impressive going forward and will hope they can get at a Strasbourg side that appear to be a little vulnerable, despite Vieira’s appointment and the money they have been able to spend in the transfer window. Both teams scoring, therefore, looks a good bet for this one.
