THE LOWDOWN

METZ

Metz gained promotion in relatively controversial circumstances last season but they will hope to put all of that behind them and mount a push towards survival back in France’s top-flight. They, under the management of Laszlo Boloni, do begin the season as one of the weakest sides in the division and even the pre-season favourites for relegation.

Their opening match of the campaign saw them hammered by five goals to one against Stade Rennais but they have since collected four points from two matches as they show some fight. They managed to earn a 2-2 draw at home to Marseille, despite being down to ten men, before then edging past Clermont by one goal to nil.

REIMS

Stade Reims became something of a meme on social media last season with the performance of Will Still as their manager. They ended up finishing in the top-half of the table and will be hoping for more this time around after some relatively heavy investment over the summer in which they have spent over £40 million on new arrivals.

They have started the 2023/24 Ligue 1 campaign with some impressive performances and results. On the opening day of the season they took an early lead away to Marseille but were eventually beaten by two goals to one. Since then, though, they have enjoyed back-to-back victories. Firstly against Clermont before an impressive 3-1 defeat of Montpellier away from home.

THE TEAM NEWS

METZ

As Metz search for a bit of consistency to back up their victory last weekend, they are unlikely to make any changed for this weekend’s encounter with Reims. They have lost key striker Georges Mikautadze to Ajax this week.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Oukidja; Colin, Traore, Cande, Udol; Jacques, N’Doram, Camara; Elisor, Bela, Sabaly

UNAVAILABLE: Lo (Suspended), Mbaye (Injured), Tetteh (Injured), Jallow (Injured)

REIMS

Will Still will be keen to keep an unchanged side from last weekend’s victory, especially with no injuries or suspensions throughout the squad.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Diouf; Foket, Agbadou, Abdelhamid, Wilson-Esbrand; Munetsi, Matusiwa, Teuma; Ito, Diakite, Nakamura

THE PREDICTION

Metz will be delighted with their start to the season, collecting four points from three matches is impressive and their 5-1 loss at Rennes on the opening day can simply be stored to one side. However, the loss of their key attacker Mikautadze makes their job very difficult. Stade Reims have spent well this summer and will be expecting to once again get on a bit of a streak with Will Still. Coming up against still weak opposition is the perfect opportunity for Reims to flex their muscles and an away win seems likely.
