THE LOWDOWN

LYON

It has been a fairly miserable campaign for Olympique Lyonnais with a turbulent summer, bluster from the owner and general mismanagement, which led to both Laurent Blanc and Fabio Grosso being sacked in the first-half of the campaign. However, the early December appointment of Pierre Sage has brought about some real change and improvement.

Combined with impressive business during the January transfer window, Lyon are beginning to propel themselves away from the bottom three and the danger zone in Ligue 1. They come into this one on the back of a 2-1 defeat of Montpellier Herault last weekend, meaning they have now managed eight victories in their last ten matches across all competitions.

NICE

Francesco Farioli, who was a surprising appointment in the summer, has produced an extremely impressive season with Nice as they challenge for a top three finish and UEFA Champions League qualification. Their strong campaign has been built upon a very strong defensive record but they conceded over 20% of the goals they have let in all season just last weekend.

That was when they suffered a 3-2 defeat at home to Monaco with Dante’s red card letting Nice down before Aleksandr Golovin scored a 77th minute winning goal for the away team. They have conceded just 14 goals this season and do remain tucked inside the top three but will need to be more proactive in attack to sustain their challenge at the top end.

THE PREDICTION

A few months ago this would have appeared a foregone conclusion in favour of the away team but we now have two teams that are trending in different directions. Lyon have steadily improved and are moving themselves away from the bottom three with Pierre Sage cultivating an impressive style of football. Nice, on the other hand, might well just be feeling the issues of a lacking of scoring options and, as a result, a double chance bet in favour of Lyon, especially at home, looks fairly safe here.

TIP: DOUBLE CHANCE – LYON TO WIN OR DRAW
