THE LOWDOWN

LYON

It has been a remarkably below par season for Olympique Lyonnais, who have already had three permanent managers so far this year. The latest appointment, Pierre Sage, appeared to have ignited some much-improved form in Lyon but they have regressed after the return from the winter break and are very much involved in the Ligue 1 relegation battle.

The seven-time French champions come into this one on the back of back-to-back defeats since that aforementioned winter break, firstly being hammered by Le Havre 3-1 and then losing 3-2 away to Stade Rennais. They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting third-from-bottom in the relegation playoff place.

MARSEILLE

Olympique de Marseille’s season has been a turbulent one, as is often the case with the southerners. They sacked Marcelino early on in the campaign and then started the Gennaro Gattuso reign very slowly but the former AC Milan midfielder has helped steer them firmly into the top-half of the table and in the hunt for European qualification.

They most recently shared a third successive draw, coming from behind twice to finish up with two apiece against Monaco. Whilst frustrating to have dropped six points in their last three games, those results have extended Marseille’s current unbeaten run of form to eight matches in Ligue 1, playing a fairly entertaining style of football, too.

THE TEAM NEWS

LYON

Johann Lepenant is unavailable for this weekend with an injury, whilst new signing Nemanja Matic is also a doubt as they face Marseille.

MARSEILLE

Marseille have Simon Ngapandouetnbu, Amine Harit, Azzedine Ounahi, Iliman Ndiaye, Ismaila Sarr and Pape Gueye all returning from the Africa Cup of Nations this weekend.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Lopez; Clauss, Meite, Balerdi, Garcia; Onana, Kondogbia, Veretout; Sarr, Aubameyang, Ndiaye

THE PREDICTION

As they battle against what would be a genuinely remarkable and stunning relegation from France’s top-flight, Lyon have become a lot more proactive and cohesive in attack. They have now not failed to score in seven matches since they were beaten 3-0 by Marseille in early December. Marseille, as mentioned, are playing a fairly entertaining style of football with their 28 matches so far this season consisting of 76 goals. Both teams scoring looks a good bet for Choc des Olympiques on Sunday evening.

TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
