THE LOWDOWN
LYON
Ahead of this season, after their takeover by John Textor last year, Olympique Lyonnais were already entering into a period of uncertainty. Their manager, Laurent Blanc, was insisting he was perhaps the man to be sacked and the results and performances at the start of this season have been poor without improvement since Blanc was replaced by Italian FIFA World Cup winner Fabio Grosso.
They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting rock-bottom in the Ligue 1 table, below Clermont on goal difference. They have collected just two points from their opening seven matches and have also scored just three goals, conceding 13. Their most recent outing was a flat 2-0 defeat away to Stade de Reims, last weekend.
LORIENT
Alongside a few other sides, Lorient have ran a successful off-field operation to establish themselves back in France’s top-flight. That may well have been disrupted by their takeover by Bill Foley and subsequent alignment with AFC Bournemouth of the Premier League. They will be a little concerned about being dragged down towards the bottom end of the table.
Their opening seven matches of the 2023/24 Ligue 1 campaign have consisted of just one win with three draws and three defeats. They have collected just one point from their last four matches having suffered a 3-0 hammering at the hands of Montpellier in their most recent outing. They have remained entertaining, though, with 25 goals coming in those seven games.

THE PREDICTION
Olympique Lyonnais have started the 2023/24 Ligue 1 campaign in terrible form and they could well be the next major, massive French club to be relegated down to Ligue 2. Their season has been simply rubbish, both on and off the pitch. They now face a Lorient side that are also underperforming and their 3-0 loss to Montpellier has them languishing down at the bottom, too. These are two struggling sides and a low-scoring encounter is expected for this early season six-pointer.
