THE LOWDOWN

LILLE

Under the management of Paulo Fonseca, Lille managed to qualify for the top five and earn UEFA Europa Conference League qualification. The northerners play a lovely style of football and were, once again, ambitious in the summer transfer window, albeit their most recent Ligue 1 outing was a 4-1 hammering at the hands of Lorient last weekend.

Remarkably, after such an impressive season last year and discussing how much they wanted to play in European football this season, the northerners have been beaten by Rijeka in the playoffs of the UEFA Europa Conference League. They suffered a 2-1 aggregate loss in that tie and the mood around the club has now dropped significantly.

MONTPELLIER

Throughout the second-half of last season, Montpellier performed poorly and actually ended up being a team that will be concerned that Ligue 1 has been reduced from 20 to 18 teams as it could be the catalyst for them being involved in a relegation battle this season. They have also lost star striker Elye Wahi to Lens for a club record sale.

Under the management of Armenian coach Michel Der Zakarian, Montpellier Herault have started the 2023/24 season by collecting just four points from their opening three matches. They started with a 2-2 draw at home to newly-promoted Le Havre, hammered a Lyon side in complete disarray at the moment before losing 3-1 at home to Stade Reims.

THE TEAM NEWS

LILLE

Paulo Fonseca will likely keep the same eleven from defeat at Lorient as Lille focused on their UEFA Europa Conference League tie with Rijeka during the week.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Chevalier; Santos, Yoro, Diakite, Ismaily; Andre, Miramon; Zhegrova, Yazici, Haraldsson; David

UNAVAILABLE: Ounas (Injured)

MONTPELLIER

Montpellier are expected to remain unchanged for this weekend’s trip to the north of France, albeit they remain without Theo Sainte-Luce due to injury.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Lecomte; Sacko, Jullien, Kouyate, Sylla; Ferri, Chotard; Nordin, Savanier, Al-Taamari; Adams

UNAVAILABLE: Sainte-Luce (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

The home team started the season quite well but now they are winless in their last four matches across all competitions. Lille are set to have a fairly damp and sad September international break as they get set for another season of simply trying to copy what they did last season. They now face a Montpellier side that are often inconsistent and reckless in their play under Der Zakarian but will at least play for a win at Stade du Nord. Both teams scoring seems likely for two inconsistent sides.

TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
