THE LOWDOWN

LILLE

Coached by former Roma and Shakhtar Donetsk boss Paulo Fonseca, Lille play an easy on the eye and entertaining style of football that is balanced against some genuine grit and efficiency at the back. For example, despite their attacking style, they have kept well over 20 clean sheets across all competitions so far this season.

The northerners come into this one on the back of a 2-1 defeat of struggling but fighting Metz away from home, last weekend. Metz opened the scoring via a penalty from in-form Georges Mikautadze after 23 minutes before goals from Ismaily and Yusuf Yazici turned the game on its head for Lille before half-time.

LYON

After an extremely difficult summer, Olympique Lyonnais began the season extremely badly and both Laurent Blanc then Fabio Grosso were sacked as their manager with Lyon spending the majority of the first-half of the season sitting tucked inside the bottom two and the automatic relegation places. However, the appointment of Pierre Sage has turned things around at Parc OL.

Lyon have pushed into the top-half of Ligue 1 this year and they most recently enjoyed an impressive 3-2 defeat of Monaco last weekend with Malick Fofana scoring an 84th minute winner in that game. In the 22 matches that Sage has been in charge for across all competitions, Lyon have enjoyed 17 victories.

THE PREDICTION

We could indeed have a bit of a thriller up in the north of France as Lyon travel to Lille. Paulo Fonseca’s intended style of football is to be on the front foot, despite their impressive defensive numbers, and they are still challenging for a top three finish and UEFA Champions League qualification. Whether it be via the Coupe de France or the league, Lyon are also dreaming of completing a magnificent turnaround this season and they are doing so in exciting fashion with their last seven matches across all competitions consisting of 31 goals. Both teams scoring looks a good bet.
