THE LOWDOWN

LILLE

Coached by former Roma and Shakhtar Donetsk boss Paulo Fonseca, Lille have enjoyed a very impressive 2023/24 campaign, balancing both Ligue 1 and the UEFA Europa Conference League in the first-half of the season. The northerners begin the weekend’s round of fixtures sitting tucked inside the top five of the table.

They did, though, head into the Ligue 1 winter break on the back of picking up two points from their final three matches. They were beaten 2-1 by a resurgent and improving Strasbourg side just before the stoppage. They have returned from the break in emphatic fashion, though, with a 12-0 victory over Golden Lion in the Coupe de France, last weekend.

LORIENT

Under the management of Regis Le Bris, Lorient begin the second-half of the season very much involved in Ligue 1’s relegation battle. After a couple of seasons of overperformance, including reaching the top-half last season, Lorient are currently in the bottom two and the automatic relegation places.

They come into this one on the back of just two victories in their 17 matches so far this season but have at least been entertaining to watch throughout the campaign. Their 17 games have consisted of 56 goals with 35 conceded – comfortably the most in the league. They do come into this one on the back of a 2-1 defeat to Sochaux in the Coupe de France, last weekend.

THE PREDICTION

Last season, these two sides appeared relatively evenly matched in mid-table but they have very much gone in different directions this time around. Lille will be aiming to break back into the top three and earn UEFA Champions League qualification, whilst Lorient are desperate and appear to have not improved after the winter break – and they are missing so many key players. As a result, a comfortable Lille victory, especially with their home advantage, would appear the way to go for this one.

TIP: LILLE TO WIN
