THE LOWDOWN
CLERMONT
Ever since gaining promotion to the French top-flight in 2020, Clermont have been favourites to go straight back down to Ligue 2. However, each season goes by and Pascal Gastien, with an excellent off-field operation, have overperformed and even, like last year, pushed into the top-half by the end of the campaign.
This time around, though, they look set for a fairly miserable battle against the drop. They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting rock-bottom in the Ligue 1 table, having collected just one point from their opening six matches. They were beaten by newly-promoted Le Havre in their most recent outing, last weekend.
PSG
Luis Enrique is in charge of a Paris Saint-Germain side that is in the middle of a rejuvenation in their squad and general mentality. They spent over £200 million in the summer transfer window as plenty of French stars, such as Randal Kolo Muani, arrived and the likes of Lionel Messi and Neymar finally departed the club.
Their shift in style has brought inconsistent results at the start of this season but performances have gradually improved with Luis Enrique’s possession-dominant style of football really beginning to show with the Parisiens. They come into this on the back of hammering Olympique de Marseille in ‘Le Classique’ last Sunday evening.
THE TEAM NEWS
CLERMONT
There are no real concerns for Pascal Gastien ahead of this weekend’s visit of the reigning champions and they are able to name an unchanged eleven.
PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Diaw; Seidu, Pelmard, Caufriez; Konate, Gonalons, Magnin, Gastien, Allevinah; Nicholson, Cham
UNAVAILABLE: Neto Borges (Suspended), Armougom (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE:
PSG
Kylian Mbappe may not be risked ahead of PSG’s trip to Newcastle United in the UEFA Champions League group stages during the week.
PREDICTED XI (3-4-3): Donnarumma; Marquinhos, Skriniar, Hernandez; Hakimi, Ugarte, Zaire-Emery, Barcola; Dembele, Kolo Muani, Mbappe
UNAVAILABLE: Asensio (Injured), Letellier (Injured), Rico (Injured), Mendes (Injured), Kimpembe (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Mbappe (Injured)
THE PREDICTION
Even whilst Clermont have overperformed expectations in recent seasons, they have remained unable to really ever trouble PSG. PSG are dominant in French football and even in a transitional year will eventually rise to the top-of-the-table and, playing in the style that Luis Enrique wants, they should do it in a fairly free scoring and entertaining manner. A heavy and high-scoring away win is the expected outcome in Clermont.
TIP: PSG TO WIN -2 HANDICAP
