THE LOWDOWN

BREST

Under the management of former Sunderland player Eric Roy, Stade Brest began the 2023/24 Ligue 1 campaign as the surprise package, flying high towards the very top end of the table. However, an autumnal slump saw them begin to look over their shoulder towards the danger zone but they have arrested that slide and are looking upwards again.

Performances remain unconvincing but the home team come into this one on the back of back-to-back victories. Brest’s most recent outing saw them defeat Clermont by three goals to nil before following that up with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Montpellier Herault as they sit in the top-half of the table.

STRASBOURG

Patrick Vieira remains in charge of Strasbourg at the time of writing but the former Nice and Crystal Palace manager is coming under intense pressure. The Clearlake Capital owned Alsace-based club have had a lot of investment into the squad but languish down in the bottom-half of the table, in danger of relegation.

The visitors begin this one sitting just a point above Lorient, who occupy the relegation playoff place. They come into this on the back of a 2-1 defeat away to an out of form Stade de Reims side last weekend that has extended their current winless run of form to seven matches as they continue to underperform.

THE TEAM NEWS

STRASBOURG

Strasbourg have no fresh injury concerns or suspension issues for this weekend so they will be able to name an unchanged eleven as they make the trip to Brest.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Sels; Senaya, Nyamsi, Perrin, Guilbert; Mwanga, Doukoure; Bakwa, Gameiro, Diarra; Emegha

THE PREDICTION

As mentioned, despite their recent victories, Brest’s performances have remained unconvincing and the likelihood of them maintaining some sort of European challenge is very small. They have been able to contain teams, though, especially at home. They now face a Strasbourg side that have managed just 11 goals in their 13 games with only one team scoring fewer than that so far this season. Given that, regardless of the end match result, a fairly tough watch for the neutral is to be expected on Thursday evening.
