THE TEAM NEWS

LIVERPOOL

  • Liverpool left it late but did what was required to progress to their second Club World Cup final after they edged Mexican outfit Monterrey in a closely-fought contest in their semi-final.
  • Having taken an early lead, Liverpool were immediately pegged back by Monterrey and with extra-time looking inevitable, substitute Roberto Firmino produced the goods to send Liverpool into the final.
  • Liverpool named a makeshift side for the semi-final with captain Jordan Henderson lining up in the unfamiliar role of centre back but they are likely to make some changes for the final with the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane set to start.

FLAMENGO

  • Flamengo produced a solid second-half display as they overturned a one-goal half-time deficit with three goals to advance to the final of the Club World Cup in their first appearance in the competition.
  • Giorgian De Arrascaeta levelled the scores soon after the break before Bruno Henrique gave his side the lead with just 12 minutes remaining and an own goal shortly after sealed the victory for the Brazilians.
  • Henrique’s contribution was vital as he overcame a hamstring complaint to take to the field but his fitness will once again be monitored owing to the short turnaround to the final, although he is expected to be in the starting XI.

THE PREDICTION

Both Liverpool and Flamengo were made to sweat in their respective semi-final contests but they both prevailed late on to advance to the final. Liverpool named a weakened side against Monterrey and they are expected to field a stronger team for the final as they hunt a first Club World Cup success but they will not have things their own way against Flamengo. The Brazilians will pose them plenty of questions but Liverpool’s class should tell to lift the trophy.
