THE LOWDOWN

WALES

  • For the second consecutive European Championships, Wales have made the knockout stages. Only eight of their 2016 squad remain in what has been an impressive decade of player and coach development for the Welsh.
  • It is expected that Rob Page will revert back to a 4-1-4-1 away from the 5-3-2 that had been deployed against Italy. They will also be without Ethan Ampadu due to his straight red card in the second-half of the match.
  • Kieffer Moore is likely to come back into the starting line-up after he was rested against Italy because he was on a booking.

DENMARK

  • A remarkably impressive and emotional evening last Monday took place in Copenhagen as the Danes ran riot against a poor Russian side. They defeated their opponents by four goals to one with a late second-half blitz led by the irrepressible Joakim Maehle down the left-hand side..
  • It is anticipated that Kasper Hjulmand will stick with the back three that has serves them well in terms of performance against Belgium and Russia. That move was sparked by the terrible events involving Christian Eriksen.
  • A victory in this one would be Denmark’s first quarter-final at a major tournament since they won this competition in 1992. They were knocked out of the 2018 World Cup on penalties against Croatia in the Round of 16.

THE KEY STATS

  • Wales have only failed to score in two of their previous nine EURO final tournament matches – Wales to score
  • Wales have conceded the first goal in four of their last five EURO final tournament matches – Denmark to score first
  • Denmark have won each of their last three competitive matches against Wales and have scored two goals in each of those three games – Denmark to win and score over 1.5 goals
  • Denmark have only failed to score in one of their last 14 international matches – Denmark to score
  • Denmark have scored a goal in the first half in five of their last six EURO final tournament matches – Denmark to score in the first half

THE PREDICTION

This is a match that immediately seems, from a British media perspective, a fairly even contest. However, Denmark come into this as the much better side in terms of performance, results and personnel. The aforementioned terrible events involving Christian Eriksen forced Denmark into a corner and a difficult position to qualify from following their defeat to Finland in that match as well as prompting a change in system. However, they have been excellent since then. Wales performed brilliantly against Turkey, valiantly against Italy and very poorly against Switzerland. As much as the story of the Welsh side over recent years is special, Denmark will come into this as the favourites.
