THE LOWDOWN

SWEDEN

  • A 1-0 victory over Slovakia last Friday has assured Sweden’s progression into the knockout stages of the competition. at the time of writing, they are one of three teams yet to concede a goal in the competition alongside Italy and England.
  • Despite that, they still have something to play for and that is the positioning in the group with the winners of this group playing against one of the third placed teams that qualify.
  • Victor Lindelof has been exceptional alongside Robin Olsen in the Sweden defence in what has been some functional and effective performances from Janne Andersson’s side. Dejan Kulusevski has fully returned from his earlier isolation so, now that qualification has been assured, the Juventus winger could come in to add a bit more attacking threat alongside the impressive Alexander Isak and Emil Forsberg.

POLAND

  • Paulo Sousa’s difficult but short reign as the Poland manager seems to have finally got some sort of lift off after their 1-1 draw in Seville against Spain. The side is inevitably set up to support Robert Lewandowski and the legendary Bayern Munich striker obliged, at last, with a first goal at a major tournament for his nation since 2012.
  • That performance remained functional in order to stifle an already blunt Spanish attack but there were some extra threats than the Swedes had in their goalless draw against Spain. Kamil Jozwiak attacked in the first half whilst Przemyslaw Frankowski may have earned himself a start due to some enterprising runs in the second half.
  • The Polish must win. If they fail to win then they are out, if they win then they are through and that could put Spain’s status in the tournament in major doubt, too.

THE KEY STATS

  • Sweden have won each of their last five international matches against Poland – Sweden to win
  • Sweden have won each of their last four international matches against Poland by a margin of at least two goals – Sweden -1.5 handicap
  • Sweden have won each of their last five competitive matches against Poland without conceding a goal – Sweden to win to nil
  • Poland have not scored more than one goal in any of their previous 13 EURO final tournament matches – Poland under 1.5 goals
  • Poland have only failed to score in two of their last ten EURO final tournament matches – Poland to score

THE PREDICTION

One team is through whilst the other one must win to go through; regardless of the result, it is set to be an intriguing evening. Both sides have avoided defeat against Spain whilst circumstances have conspired to provide different results against Slovakia whilst the Swedes won late with a penalty and the Polish went down to ten men halfway through the second half. If it is to be another tight match, the motivation and quality of Poland having the world’s best striker will give them the edge in St Petersburg.

Tip: POLAND to WIN & UNDER 3.5 GOALS
