THE LOWDOWN

RUSSIA

  • After a thumping 0-3 defeat at the hands of Belgium, Russia bounced back very well in their second Group B game, beating Finland by a single goal in Saint Petersburg.
  • With the four best third-placed teams going through to the knockout stage, a draw here would possibly be enough to send Russia through, although their poor goal difference puts them at a disadvantage.
  • Yuri Zhirkov is out injured for Russia, whilst Mario Fernandes has been cleared of any spinal injury after being stretched off vs Finland having landed awkwardly jumping for a header, although the defender is understandably a huge doubt for this game.

DENMARK

  • Despite taking the lead against Belgium, Denmark ultimately fell to defeat against the Group B leaders, but they had plenty of positives to take from the match.
  • Most pleasing from a Danish perspective will have not only been the workrate, but also the amount of chances they created, albeit with little end product which ultimately proved their undoing.
  • After such a good performance, Kasper Hjulmand has a tough decision to make on whether to name an unchanged side, or bring another attacking player like Robert Skov into the starting line-up in a bid to improve his side’s potency in front of goal.

THE KEY STATS

  • Russia have only failed to score in one of their last seven international matches – Russia to score
  • Russia have not scored more than one goal in any of their last seven EURO final tournament matches – Russia under 1.5 goals
  • Denmark have lost each of their last four EURO final tournament matches – Russia to win
  • Denmark have conceded two goals or more in eight of their last 12 EURO final tournament matches – Denmark to concede over 1.5 goals
  • Denmark have kept only one clean sheet in their last seven EURO final tournament matches – Russia over 0.5 goals

THE PREDICTION

Denmark gave an excellent account of themselves against Belgium in their second Group B fixture, taking the lead in only the second minute and dominating the first half against the number one ranked side in the world. However, they failed to put the result beyond doubt when on top and Belgium bounced back in the second half to come back and force a 1-2 victory. However, despite two successive defeats the Danes can still qualify for the knockout stage, although to give themselves a chance they will have to beat a Russia side off the back of a win over Finland last time out. However, a large Danish crowd in Copenhagen will not make it easy for Russia and if Denmark play as well as they did in the first half vs Belgium for 90 minutes here and show a more clinical edge in front of goal, then Kasper Hjulmand’s men should be able to pick up the three points.
