THE LOWDOWN
NETHERLANDS
- Question marks hover over Netherlands heading into EURO 2020 with Frank de Boer having endured an inconsistent reign as head coach so far, however with three wins and 14 goals over the course of their last four international matches (including friendlies), the Dutch may just be hitting their stride at the perfect time.
- Leading the line for Netherlands going forward is the in-form Memphis Depay, who has registered six goals and two assists across his last six appearances for his country and he will be supported from midfield by the likes of Frenkie de Jong and Georginio Wijnaldum
- However, de Boer will be without the services of captain and central defender Virgil van Dijk, who has been absent for a number of months now through injury, meaning that 21-year-old Matthijs de Ligt must shoulder the responsibility of leading the defence, providing he himself recovers from a groin problem that saw him miss his side’s final warm up friendly.
UKRAINE
- Ukraine may have surprised a few when they topped their EURO 2020 qualification group over reigning European champions Portugal, but having gone unbeaten throughout their eight matches, they aren’t to be underestimated this summer.
- Since suffering a 3-0 defeat to Switzerland last November in the UEFA Nations League, Ukraine have not lost in their last six matches since (including friendlies), even holding 2018 World Cup champions France to a 1-1 draw back in March.
- Andriy Shevchenko has lots of options to choose from throughout his squad with plenty of strength in depth, however winger Viktor Tsygankov is a serious injury doubt following a recent ankle injury.

THE KEY STATS
- Ukraine have lost each of their last five EURO final tournament matches – Netherlands to win
- Netherlands have scored more than one goal in only of their previous eight opening group stage matches at a EURO final tournament – Netherlands to score under 1.5 goals
- Netherlands have only failed to score in one of their last 14 EURO final tournament group stage matches – Netherlands to score
- Just one of the 11 goals scored in Ukraine’s previous six EURO final tournament matches came in the opening 45 minutes – No goals scored in the first half
- Netherlands have lost each of their last four EURO final tournament matches – Double chance draw or Ukraine
THE PREDICTION
An intriguing encounter lies ahead here in Group C between Netherlands and a Ukraine side who have the potential to surprise a lot of teams at this tournament. Shevchenko’s men have proven very difficult to beat in recent games, although Netherlands at a major tournament with home advantage in their favour represents a very tough challenge for Ukraine. De Boer often enforces a playing style that involves a slow build up, however if Ukraine sit in then they could make it very difficult for Netherlands to break them down. When considering that five of Ukraine’s last six games (including friendlies) have seen under 2.5 goals scored, it would be no surprise if the same outcome was to occur here.
Tip: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
