THE LOWDOWN
NETHERLANDS
- The Netherlands showed signs of being one of EURO 2020’s more entertaining sides after triumphing 3-2 against Ukraine in their opening match of the tournament, despite at one stage sacrificing a two-goal lead in a match that saw all five goals scored in the second half.
- That result means that Frank de Boer’s side have now racked up 19 goals over the course of their last six competitive fixtures, also conceding eight goals across those same clutch of games.
- Centre-back Matthijs de Ligt missed his team’s win over Ukraine due to a groin problem, although the defender has since returned to training and is likely to be fit for this contest.
AUSTRIA
- Austria made history in their first Group C fixture, securing their first ever European Championship victory after beating a plucky North Macedonian side 3-1 in a match that saw them dominate possession throughout.
- Despite their control of the match, head coach Franco Foda had to turn to his bench with the scores locked at 1-1 and substitutes Michael Gregoritsch and Marko Arnautovic had the desired effect, both scoring inside the final 15 minutes, with captain Julian Baumgartlinger also making an appearance as a substitute in second half injury time.
- Arnautovic’s celebration saw him direct a verbal insult at North Macedonia’s Gianni Alioski that will result in him missing this game due to having been given a one-match ban, whilst Gregoritsch will be hoping that his goal is enough to be awarded a start by Foda against the Netherlands ahead of either Baumgartner or Kalajdzic, as will Gregoritsch

THE KEY STATS
- Netherlands have won each of their last six international matches against Austria – Netherlands to win
- Netherlands have conceded two or more goals in four of their last five EURO final tournament matches – Austria to score over 1.5 goals
- Netherlands have not drawn any of their last nine EURO final tournament matches – Double chance: Netherlands or Austria
- Netherlands have scored two goals or more in each of their last seven international matches against Austria – Netherlands to score over 1.5 goals
- Austria have kept just one clean sheet in their previous seven EURO final tournament matches – Netherlands to score
THE PREDICTION
Neither of these two sides were totally convincing in their respective matches last Sunday, but having each won and netted three goals in the process, both will be in a positive state of mind heading into this clash at Johan Cruijff Arena. Austria will be confident they can take advantage of the defensive frailties shown by the Netherlands in their opening match, however Franco Foda’s men will have to be on their guard when taking into account the attacking prowess of the Dutch. Either way, a high scoring contest is expected here as was the case in the opening round of Group C fixtures. Austria’s last four competitive matches have seen over 2.5 goals scored, as have five of Netherlands’ most recent six competitive games and the same outcome looks very much on the cards in this one, regardless of who comes out on top.
Tip: OVER 2.5 GOALS
