THE LOWDOWN
ENGLAND
- A controlled and commanding display gave England a 1-0 victory over Croatia in the opening match on Sunday; the first time they have ever won their opening match of the European Championships.
- Gareth Southgate’s selection in that match caused debate but it is arguable that his three ‘controversial’ picks were England’s best performers outside of match winner Raheem Sterling. It is anticipated those three (Tyrone Mings, Kieran Trippier and Kalvin Phillips) will keep their places in the eleven.
- The most notable potential change could be Jack Grealish making his first appearance at a major tournament in the place of Phil Foden in England’s front four whilst Jordan Henderson and Harry Maguire edge closer to fitness but are still unlikely to start yet. Southgate could also opt for a more attacking and progressive left-footed option, against weaker opposition than Croatia, at left-back with Luke Shaw or Ben Chilwell coming in for Kyle Walker and Trippier moving to right-back.
SCOTLAND
- Scotland’s first match at a major tournament this century ended in a 2-0 defeat at home to the Czech Republic and they conceded one of the most memorable goals in the history of major tournament football via Patrik Schick. It didn’t go exactly according to plan. The loss of Kieran Tierney due to injury was a huge blow for Steve Clarke’s side as he, despite playing in the back three, tends to set whatever tempo Scotland want to try and play at.
- Clarke did come under criticism for his dropping of Che Adams and selection of Stephen O’Donnell. Adams eventually replaced Ryan Christie at half-time and the Scots went with two up-front however Clarke could be tempted to play both Adams and Christie with Lyndon Dykes dropping to the bench. Nathan Patterson of Rangers will be expected to come in for O’Donnell.
- The fitness of Tierney remains crucial to Scotland but it is also something unknown and Clarke didn’t sound exactly confident in his post-match interview. The Scots created several half-chances and probably should have got on the score sheet but they were managed out of the game by a calm Czech side.

THE PREDICTION
A derby match is always built up as though anything can happen but it rarely does and, in this instance, it really shouldn’t. This is a match between one of the bookies’ tournament favourites and a team that failed to qualify via their actual qualification group but squeezed through in a playoff penalty shoot-out thanks to a relatively successful Nations League campaign in 2018. The former of those two are also at home. This should be a fairly comfortable England victory and it should also be tipped up to be ‘to nil’ given that England have conceded just five goals in their last 17 matches in a run whereby they have kept 13 clean sheets.
