THE LOWDOWN

CZECH REPUBLIC

  • Four points from their opening two matches has put Czech Republic in a strong position heading into this final Group D encounter and they will finish top if they avoid defeat here.
  • It’s been a tournament to remember so far for Patrik Schick, with the Bayer Leverkusen frontman following up his excellent brace against Scotland with a third goal of the competition against Croatia. At the time of writing, Schick is tied with Cristiano Ronaldo at the top of the EURO 2020 goalscoring charts, with bookies such as bet-colorado.com offering good odds on who the top scorer will be.
  • The Czechs have no injury issues to contend with right now and, given their level of performance so far, personnel changes would seem unlikely here but Jaroslav Silhavy does have options should he wish to freshen things up.

ENGLAND

  • A wholly uninspiring performance in Friday’s goalless draw with Scotland has left many onlookers asking questions of England’s ability to go on and win EURO 2020 but they are now guaranteed a spot in the round of 16 regardless of the result here.
  • Having failed to register a shot on target in either of England’s games so far, the below-par displays of key man Harry Kane have become an area of concern but the supporting cast – much heralded in the lead up to EURO 2020 – have struggled to provide him with adequate service in truth.
  • Gareth Southgate will be keen for the returning Harry Maguire to get some minutes under his belt ahead of the knockout stages, while further rotation is inevitable especially as Chelsea pair Ben Chilwell and Mason Mount are absent as they must isolate following contact with Scotland's Billy Gilmour, who has since tested positive for COVID-19.

THE PREDICTION

With the winner of Group D set to face the runner-up in the “Group of Death” featuring France, Germany and Portugal, a draw would in all likelihood suit England here as they would likely face an easier – on paper at least – round of 16 opponent. Whether that has any bearing on the outcome of this match remains to be seen, and there will regardless be plenty of pressure on Gareth Southgate’s men to put in an improved display after their lacklustre performance against Scotland. Both sides may approach this one rather cautiously so a low-scoring game is anticipated.
