THE LOWDOWN
FRANCE
- Pre-tournament favourites France have not yet hit the heights that many expected them to but they nevertheless finished top of the ‘Group of Death’ and they will want to put down a real marker here against the Swiss.
- Karim Benzema’s first two goals since his reintroduction to the national side will have pleased Didier Deschamps but he really needs star forward Kylian Mbappe to get off the mark.
- Deschamps has an issue at left-back with both Lucas Hernandez and Lucas Digne nursing knocks sustained against Portugal last time out but Hernandez looks the likeliest to win his fitness battle.
SWITZERLAND
- Switzerland reached the round of 16 for the second consecutive European Championship tournament after qualifying as one of the best third-placed teams from their group, but they are now faced with the unenviable task of taking on the reigning world champions.
- Vladimir Petkovic’s side saved their best performance for last in the group when Xherdan Shaqiri – so often their saviour – insured them to a 3-1 victory over Turkey but chances will be fewer and farther between here and they were notably exposed when they lost to Italy in their second group encounter.
- Petkovic does not have any injury concerns so could well go unchanged here, although the general focus will surely have to be on defensive solidity given the French attacking talent they will be facing.

THE PREDICTION
Although there are one or two question marks over France’s ability to go all the way at EURO 2020 given their somewhat inconsistent performances in the group stage, it is a lot to ask of Switzerland to cause a shock here as the French simply have the edge in quality all over the pitch. The fact they qualified top of Group F without Kylian Mbappe hitting his stride is a frightening prospect and this could well be the game that the PSG star announces himself at the tournament. A repeat of Saturday’s surprise result – with Czech Republic eliminating the Dutch – seems unlikely here and backing Mbappe to get on the scoresheet looks tempting in the betting markets.
