Unai Emery begun his Aston Villa spell extremely impressively but The Villains come into this on the back of three successive defeats in which they have conceded 11 goals, including two 4-2 defeats at Villa Park. Changes could therefore be rung if he seeks to re-establish a winning formula.
At Villarreal, Emery would often prefer a 4-4-2 system and, at times, used Alberto Moreno as an extra bit of defensive cover on the left-hand side. Alex Moreno could be used in that role but the former Betis man came in at left-back, ahead of Lucas Digne, last weekend.
Moreno and Tyrone Mings struggled against the movement and quality of Bukayo Saka but it is unlikely Emery changes both, if he swaps one out then Moreno for Digne seems likely. The rest of the defence, on the right-hand side, remains well set with Ezri Konsa and Matty Cash.
Last weekend, Emery’s narrow midfield four had Philippe Coutinho on the left and John McGinn on the right. Coutinho scored but didn’t offer much else in the match, whilst McGinn is also struggling to regain some form. The central duo of Boubacar Kamara and Douglas Luiz is a lock.
Emi Buendia is likely to always be in an Emery side, whether in the front two or out-wide and, given that the former Arsenal boss is likely to seek pace on the attack away from home with Leon Bailey and Ollie Watkins, Buendia should displace Coutinho on the left. McGinn, as club captain, should probably maintain his place on the right.
